University of Phoenix Fights for a Cure
This fall University of Phoenix went to battle against the disease
that that affects over 184,000 Americans a year—breast cancer. As
the local presenting sponsor of the Susan G. Komen Phoenix Race for
the Cure; employees, students, faculty and alumni laced up their
running shoes and raced to the finish line for a cure.
Through the months of September and October, University of Phoenix pink-atized themselves through various fundraising and awareness events, communications and registration drives which led to over 1,070 individuals registering for the University of Phoenix team to sleep in, run, walk or volunteer for Race for the Cure. By race day on October 12, 2008, through both the Apollo sponsorship and employee giving, University of Phoenix donated over $115,000 to the Susan G. Komen Phoenix affiliate.
Team Pink Comes to the University of Phoenix Stadium
October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month and University of Phoenix
proudly joined in the fight towards finding a cure for breast
cancer. On October 12, 2008 University of Phoenix honored employees
who were breast cancer survivors as well as executives from Susan G.
Komen at the Arizona Cardinals game against the Dallas Cowboys.
During the afternoon complete with a history-making touchdown,
guests shared stories of inspiration and strength of their own
personal battles. The game also served as the finish line to this
year’s Susan G. Komen Phoenix Race for the Cure in which University
of Phoenix was the local presenting sponsor.
Phoenix Area Employees Volunteered for a Cure!
At this year’s Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Phoenix,
Arizona, employees raced, walked, donated, participated, and
volunteered for a cure in a big way! A dozen helpful volunteers from
different departments across Apollo Group showed their community
spirit by giving of their time at the University of Phoenix tent on
Race Day. Volunteers worked hard setting up for the event, and once
the day started, they handed out University of Phoenix giveaways and
provided information on our exceptional degree programs to race
participants. The University of Phoenix booth was full of excitement
as the crowd kept on coming to learn about our programs and to help
celebrate the Race for the Cure. Thanks to all the volunteers who
worked so hard and had a great time doing it!
University of Phoenix Honored at the Everybody Wins! Annual Gala
Children are the future leaders of the world. University of Phoenix is a strong supporter of programs such as the Everybody Wins! organization that provides literacy education to these children. In October 2008, University of Phoenix received high recognition at the Everybody Wins! annual Gala in New York City, for providing the organization with a grant to launch new programs to educate disadvantaged children in the Brooklyn community of Ocean-Hill Brownsville. The new programs will address adult literacy issues as well children’s, focusing on bringing literacy to the entire family.
Animals for a Cure
Susan G. Komen wasn’t the only non-profit to benefit from University of Phoenix’s fundraising efforts this October, 2008. In an effort to raise awareness and funds, a Department Dollar War launched and various departments around Phoenix joined in the friendly competition to see who could raise the most money for Susan G. Komen. After a close race, the Facilities Department came out ahead and as the winning department, could make a donation to the charity of their choice—the Arizona Humane Society. Because of the Facility Department’s commitment to giving back, two non-profit organizations received financial support needed to focus on their cause.
University of Phoenix Southeast Online Division Made a Difference!
October 25, 2008, marked a remarkable national day of service.
Make a Difference Day, celebrated annually on the last Saturday of
October, is the largest day of volunteering in the nation.
Individuals, families, groups, and corporations nationwide
participated in this amazing project.
University of Phoenix joined in on the excitement by kicking off their Habitat for Humanity build in Chandler, Arizona on this year’s Make a Difference Day. As an official, registered project, University of Phoenix’s Habitat build joined thousands of corporations, groups and individuals around the nation taking a step toward a better community.
In Chandler, a team from the Southeast Online Division of University of Phoenix worked together with Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona to begin construction on a home that University of Phoenix employees will work tireless to complete over the next 15 weeks. The day was made extra-special with a Wall-Raising Ceremony that included a home blessing and Habitat’s wall-signing tradition during which volunteers wrote messages to the family on the framing of the house. Employee teams from Phoenix will work over the next three months to build a home together for a deserving family. Make a Difference Day was a great start to the ongoing Habitat for Humanity build in Arizona, and it couldn’t have been done without our exceptional employee volunteers.
Diversity Leadership Alliance Conference
On October 22, 2008, University of Phoenix was a sponsor of the 2008 Diversity Leadership Alliance Conference in Phoenix, Arizona. The theme for the event was “Engaging an Inclusive Community” and featured a talk by world renowned Keynote Speaker Stedman Graham. The conference included workshops, discussions, and networking opportunities for professionals interested in learning about diversity issues, best practices, and much more. The event hosted 2,000 professionals from around the state of Arizona, and guests had the chance to learn about engaging an inclusive community throughout the day.
Dinner in the Stacks
On October 18, 2008, University of Phoenix was proud to support
the Phoenix Public Library as a sponsor of the 2008 Dinner in the
Stacks at the Burton Barr Public Library in Phoenix, Arizona. The
event sought to raise money to impact the lives of 100,000 children
by assisting in providing a quality literacy experience in Phoenix’s
public libraries. Proceeds from the event will support programs and
services that encourage children to read, and partner with parents
and caregivers to support the development of early literacy skills.
University of Phoenix was proud to partner with the Phoenix Public
Library in their work to foster literacy among youth; it was an
evening to remember!
Teach for America ARETE Honors Event
On October 17, 2008, University of Phoenix was a proud sponsor of the 19th Annual ARETE Honors for Courage in Sports event in Chicago, Illinois. Proceeds from the event benefited Teach for America, an amazing organization whose mission is to build the movement to eliminate educational inequality by enlisting our nation’s most promising future leaders in the effort. Teach for America builds a national group of outstanding recent college graduates of all academic majors who commit to teach for two years in our nation’s lowest-income communities and become lifelong teachers in pursuit of educational excellence and equity.
The ARETE Honors for Courage in Sports honor men and women who have no limits, because they refuse to accept limitation, and who will let no obstacle stand in the way of their dreams. The event celebrated athletes who exemplify courage by persevering in the face of a challenge. It was an evening to remember, benefiting a world-class organization that promotes equal education for all.
Arizona Women’s Leadership Forum
On Wednesday, October 15, 2008, University of Phoenix sponsored the Arizona Women’s Leadership forum in Scottsdale, Arizona. The Arizona Women’s Leadership Forum challenged individuals to view leadership in powerful new ways and enrich their own sense of possibility. The forum brought together world-caliber leaders and experts along with senior-level women from the corporate, professional, entrepreneurial, nonprofit, and governmental sectors of Arizona for a series of conversations that fostered leadership and empowered women to act as mentors and make a difference in their businesses, communities, and lives. The theme of the all-day event was “Leaders Inspiring Leaders”, and University of Phoenix was proud to support the event and have an exceptional group of its own female leaders present at the forum. It was a day that inspired all those in attendance to lead and empower those with whom they work.
Chico Campus Has a Day of Service
On Friday, October 10, 2008, employees from the North Valley
Learning Center volunteered at the Chico Boys and Girls Club in
Chico, California. Nine enthusiastic staff members from the Learning
Center showed up to the Boys and Girls Club ready to roll up their
sleeves and do some good in their community! After a tour of the
facility, the employees were taken to an old storage building soon
to be turned into a conference room that was in dire need of some
cleaning. The stellar University of Phoenix team got to work
diligently clearing space, scrubbing walls, removing carpet and
tile, doing yard work, and so much more. After a hard day working to
help the club provide necessary services for children in the
community, the employee volunteers got to meet other volunteers from
the club who shared their thanks for a job well done by University
of Phoenix. The team looks forward to being invited back when the
new room is complete. The North Valley Learning Center is an
inspiration to all of us!
University of Phoenix Supports Valley Children’s Groups
On October 5, 2008, University of Phoenix honored valley children’s groups by hosting them at the Arizona Cardinals game. To celebrate the contributions that many organizations make to Valley youth, the Arizona Cardinals game was a “Thanks for Helping the Children Day.” In honor of this day, University of Phoenix invited members from various children’s organizations including, Kids Chance, the National Association of Foster and Adoptive Parents, the Arizona Special Olympics, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix.
By supporting these valley groups, we can foster a bright future for the next generations.
Greater Phoenix Economic Council Dinner
On October 1st, 2008, University of Phoenix was a proud sponsor of the Greater Phoenix Economic Council (GPEC) Dinner. GPEC provides expert support in streamlining site searches for businesses, connecting decision-makers, and leveraging knowledge assets that spur innovation. Since 1989, GPEC’s unique structure and solid partnerships have supported a sustainable, high-performance economy. Today, the Greater Phoenix Economic Council is comprised of 18 communities, Maricopa County, and more than 140 private-sector companies, serving as the catalyst that strengthens the region’s economic base, ensuring it is both diversified and competitive. Our own President, Bill Pepicello, is himself Vice Chairman of the Greater Phoenix Economic Council Board of Directors. University of Phoenix was proud to be part of such a great event supporting Arizona businesses and economic issues.
