Every woman counts and University of Phoenix along with Lifetime
set out to spread the word this month. During August 2008, through
the partnership with the Lifetime Every Woman Counts Program,
individuals were invited to several campuses including Nashville,
Atlanta, New Orleans, Houston and Denver to visit the Every Woman
Counts Lifetime traveling bus that encourages women to vote
in this year’s election. In addition to the bus tour sponsorship, we
also launched a scholarship program inviting Lifetime viewers to
submit video applications with the chance to receive a full-tuition

AZ’s Finest 2008
On August 16, 2008, University of Phoenix was proud to be a part
of AZ’s Finest 2008, an event benefiting the Cystic Fibrosis
Foundation. The Phoenix, Arizona event was an inspiring evening that
honored Arizona’s finest professionals and raised money for the
Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, a donor-sponsored nonprofit organization
dedicated to finding therapies and a cure for the disease.
Each year the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in Arizona honors 20 men and women across the Valley as “AZ’s Finest” for their charitable and professional accomplishments. This year University of Phoenix’s own Shelly Hodges, a Vice President for University of Phoenix Online, was among the honorees. Shelly and her fellow honorees were chosen for their outstanding leadership qualities, active volunteer roles, and excellence in the business community. As an honoree, Shelly has committed to raising money to help the Foundation realize its mission of controlling and curing cystic fibrosis. University of Phoenix is proud of the great work Shelly has done, and the AZ’s Finest gala was an excellent tribute to the finest professionals in the Valley.
University of Phoenix Explores the Arizona Science Center
A weekend filled with nature’s most powerful forces! In August 2008, Apollo Group employees and its subsidiaries were invited to
escape the heat and explore the Arizona Science Center for a field
trip of discovery during the University of Phoenix Employee
Appreciation Weekend, August 9 and 10, 2008. Over 2,500 employees
visited the Science Center and toured exhibits such as the “Forces
of Nature” gallery. This gallery describes the movement of tectonic
plates, the process of erosion and the causes of extreme weather
conditions—such as the famous monsoons going on in Arizona’s
backyard.
The employee appreciation weekend was in association with University of Phoenix’s partnership with the Arizona Science Center. Through the partnership, University of Phoenix created an online guide that explains the scientific principles of the new “Forces of Nature” gallery. The guide gives guests a chance to learn about the exhibit prior to their visit and it also includes simple related activities that families can do at home such as making your own seismograph, making a tornado in a bottle, making a cloud in a jar—and much more! Visit www.azscience.org/forces_of_nature.php to see the guide.
The HOTTEST Car Around Visits Phoenix!
University of Phoenix recently joined forces with AzRise, an
organization at University of Arizona dedicated to promoting and
developing solar technology, to support the exploration of solar
power. As part of the partnership, University of Phoenix is
supporting AzRise with several ongoing projects, one being the
Drifter 2.0 solar car and racing team for the 2008 North American
Solar Challenge. The Drifter 2.0 team embarked on a 10-day,
2400-mile, journey from Plano, Texas to Calgary, Alberta, in
solar-powered cars each team engineered and built by hand.
On Friday, August 8th, University of Phoenix employees at the Riverpoint location in Phoenix, Arizona, got a special treat. The Drifter 2.0 solar racing car, fresh off their sun-powered race across the United States, made a stop at the buildings to educate visitors on solar energy and give everyone a look at the hottest car around! Employees stopped by to check it out and even got to see the car in action! It was a great day filled with information about solar-energy.

University of Phoenix Supports the Army Heritage Center Foundation
On August 4, 2008, at a ceremony held in conjunction with a
museum exhibit opening, Tim Gilrain, Corporate Education Manager for
the Pennsylvania and New Jersey campuses of University of Phoenix,
presented the Army Heritage Center Foundation in Pennsylvania with a
check to help fund the Foundation’s capital campaign.
The campaign involves constructing a Visitor and Education Center at
the Army Heritage and Education Center campus and also creating an
endowment to sustain educational programs.
University of Phoenix’s donation will go toward sponsoring a part of the building dedicated to educational programs. The Visitor and Education Center will be the focal point for all campus educational activities and will serve as the primary point of entry for the Army Heritage and Education Center. University of Phoenix is proud to support the outstanding educational efforts of the Army Heritage Center Foundation.
