University of Phoenix Walks for a Cause
For the second year in a row, University of Phoenix was a proud
sponsor of the March of Dime’s March for Babies this April 2008 and
the ACS Division showed their team spirit every step of the way!
With University of Phoenix showing support as the 2008 line sponsor,
the ACS Division joined in the efforts and through various
fundraising events, raised over $1,000 for the March of Dimes!
During the morning walk on April 19, 2008, ACS and other University
of Phoenix employees put on their walking shoes and marched through
Wesley Bolin Plaza in Phoenix, AZ for the continuous fight to save
babies.
University of Phoenix Celebrates Earth Day
On April 22, 2008, Apollo Group/University of Phoenix invited over 3,500
employees to attend a complimentary breakfast to honor Earth Day and the
Grand Opening of three new environmentally friendly buildings. This event
not only welcomed employees to their new locations, but it also launched the
beginning of a series of workplace seminars highlighting how University of
Phoenix has been and continues to be Sustaining Our Roots in the Valley.
The event invited the employees of the new Riverpoint locations to enjoy Earth Day and a Grand Opening celebratory breakfast buffet served by Senior Management. With Arizona Cardinal’s Big Red and cheerleaders bringing spirit to the crowd, employees enjoyed a complimentary breakfast and addresses from their executive staff while browsing the various posters throughout the building that highlighted the company’s involvement in the community, through non-profit organizations, scholarships, volunteerism and eco-friendly initiatives.
Nashville Campus Shows Off Their Green Thumbs
All it takes is a tree at a time to make a difference and the
Nashville Campus is leading by example. On April 22, Earth Day,
Nashville Campus employees and faculty grabbed their gardening gear,
gloves and volunteered their green thumbs and hands to Boys and
Girls Club of Middle Tennessee. In just three short hours, the Boys
and Girls Club was transformed into a secret garden filled with
dozens of trees, flowering shrubs and plenty of potting soil-all in
honor of Earth Day!
Throughout the afternoon, the 15 University of Phoenix employees worked alongside club members to dig holes and plant trees at the Boys and Girls Club location. With their shovels at work, the employees also took the time to educate the Boys and Girls Club kids about the value of being environmentally responsible.
Arts, Education, and Enrichment
On April 11, 2008, University of Phoenix showed their support for the arts by partnering with the Arizona Theater Company to present the great American classic, To Kill a Mockingbird. University of Phoenix invited their employees to join in showing their support of the Arizona arts by attending the performance. During this sponsored performance, over 200 University of Phoenix employees along with fellow theater enthusiasts journeyed back in time and experienced one of the most beloved coming of age stories live on stage.
As the presenting partner of the Arizona Theater Company’s performance, University of Phoenix helped to fund various ATC programs such as student matinee series, summer programs for high school students, art classes for students, internship programs, teen critic programs and more.
Anquan Boldin and University of Phoenix give back to local community
Anquan Boldin scores a touchdown both athletically and academically! From April 10 – 12, 2008, residents of Pahokee, Florida benefited from the generosity of NFL Pro Bowler Anquan Boldin and University of Phoenix. Anquan, one of Pahokee's most famous residents, returned home and brought a few of his NFL friends with him for a golf tournament, autograph session, celebrity basketball game, and "Fun-Day-at-the-Park" - all for residents of his home town of Pahokee.
University of Phoenix teamed together with Anquan to award three (3) full-tuition scholarships to local high school seniors and single moms during halftime of the celebrity basketball game. Three more full-tuition scholarships are still to be awarded for residents in Florida and Arizona who are affiliated with the Anquan Boldin Foundation.
IT Hits the Jackpot
On April 11, 2008, University of Phoenix’s very own Infrastructure and Technology department’s Senior Roundtable Committee hosted their Second Semi-Annual IT Texas Hold ‘Em Poker Tournament. Employees put on their poker faces and gathered at the local Riverpoint Data Center Break Room to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, MDA.
The first semi-annual event occurred in November 2007 raising over $3,000 for the Toys for Tots. The IT Department’s Senior Roundtable Committee is a 10-member team of the department’s influential non-management staff: Wendi Goulette, Mark Garrigan, Rafael Ferreira, Matt Iavarone, Josh Cunningham, Tash Dhillon, Shawn Wieser, Gary Crites, Jason LeBlanc, and Justin Randall. To date, the team has raised donations for organizations such as Toys for Tots, Arizona Animal Welfare League, Sojourner Center, and Phoenix Children’s Hospital.
Employees Helps Local Elementary School to Get Fit
To some schools, gym class is a luxury they can only dream about, but thanks to one University of Phoenix student and the Specialized Services Division at Online, one school’s dream is about to come true. In the winter of 2008, the Specialized Services Division adopted an elementary school in Virginia and put on their fundraising hats to raise money towards the purchase of new physical education equipment. For a small donation, employees received
Jean's Day at work and before long, the department raised over $2,000 for the school. By April 2008, students not only had the power to succeed in academics, but they received the power to succeed in physical education as well!
